Self-drive cars for your Rameswaram trip

Planning Rameswaram, also written Rameshwaram? Pick up your self-drive car in Ramanathapuram (Ramnad), then explore Pamban and the island at your own pace.

55 km from our baseabout 1 hour 15 minutesFrom ₹2,500 / day

Rameswaram sits about 55 kilometres east of our Ramanathapuram base — roughly an hour and a quarter of driving, most of it straight and open, finishing with the crossing over the Pamban road bridge. It is one of the few drives in Tamil Nadu where the road itself is part of the reason people go, and it is a very different experience behind your own wheel than it is from the back of a hired taxi.

The case for self-drive here is mostly about time of day. The Ramanathaswamy temple rewards an early arrival, and the twenty-two theerthams inside are far more manageable before the middle of the morning. A car you control means leaving Ramanathapuram at four in the morning without negotiating a night rate, and it means staying for the evening aarti without watching a meter.

It also means Dhanushkodi is genuinely on the table. The sealed road now runs almost all the way to the tip, and the stretch past Kothandaramaswamy temple with water on both shoulders is the single best hour of driving in the district. Most day-trip packages skip it or rush it. On your own schedule you can sit there until the light goes.

Why self-drive here

What a car of your own changes in Rameswaram.

Temple hours run early and late

Darshan timings and the evening aarti sit at opposite ends of the day. A car you keep overnight covers both without a second booking.

Dhanushkodi needs its own half-day

The run out to the tip and back is about 40 km from Rameswaram town. Shared transport turns it into a rushed stop; your own car makes it the point of the trip.

The island is more spread out than it looks

Agni Theertham, the temple, Villoondi Theertham and the APJ Abdul Kalam memorial are scattered across the island, not walkable from one another.

Local notes

Worth knowing before you set off.

  • Parking near the temple's east side gets tight from about 7 AM on weekends and during festival days — arriving early solves it.
  • Fill up in Ramanathapuram or at Mandapam before crossing; fuel on the island is available but the queues are longer.
  • The Pamban road bridge is open to traffic through the day, but crosswinds on the exposed section deserve a slower speed than the road tempts you into.
  • The final approach to Dhanushkodi is sealed; driving off the sealed surface onto the sand is not permitted and not worth attempting.

Good to know

Rameswaram questions.

Anything specific to your route, just ask on WhatsApp.

Can I drive a self-drive car across the Pamban bridge to Rameswaram?

Yes. The Pamban road bridge carries ordinary traffic and every car in our fleet is cleared for the crossing. Tell us Rameswaram is on your route when you enquire so we can note it on the agreement.

How long does the drive from Ramanathapuram to Rameswaram take?

Around an hour and fifteen minutes for the roughly 55 kilometres, taking NH87 through Mandapam and across the bridge. Allow longer on festival weekends when traffic backs up on the approach to the island.

Can I take the car all the way to Dhanushkodi?

Yes, the sealed road runs to the Dhanushkodi viewpoint and our cars are fine on it. Driving off the sealed road onto the sand is not allowed — it is restricted, and recovery from soft sand is not covered.

Is it better to do Rameswaram as a day trip or keep the car overnight?

Most people who want both the sunrise darshan and Dhanushkodi in decent light keep the car for two days. A single day works if you leave Ramanathapuram before 5 AM and skip the far end of the island.
